About Cleansing

What is cleansing and detoxification?

Cleansing and detoxification are the terms used to describe the process your body goes through to get rid of toxins.  The body has five channels of elimination including the bowel, kidneys, lungs, skin, and lymphatic system.  Each of these systems works together with the liver on a daily basis to remove toxins from the body.  Our cleansing program gently stimulates your organs, blood cells, tissues and the elimination channels to sweep toxins away from the body.

Why should I consider a cleansing program?

As we live, toxins accumulate in our bodies. Some of these are due to our diet and others are due to the environment around us. Of course, our lifestyle also fits in - if you smoke or use alcohol you are accumulating even more toxins.  The following warning signs are some of the indications that toxins are building up in your system:  bloating, gas, weight gain, skin problems, chronic fatigue, constipation, headaches, irritability, allergies, and poor circulation.

How will I feel during the cleansing program?

As part of the healing process, the body will begin to discard toxic residues, which have built up in your body over the years. During the initial phase of healing, as your body begins to cleanse, your vital energy begins to repair and rebuild internal organs, you may experience headaches, uneasiness, flu-like symptoms and fatigue. This is often called a “healing crisis”.  It is important that you adequately rest during this time. These symptoms will pass as your body begins to normalize to a new, vigorous level of health.

What are some of the benefits of completing a cleansing program?

Some benefits of a cleansing program include improved ability to absorb and utilize nutrients, proper elimination (2-3 bowel movements a day), increased energy, weight loss, relief from depression, refreshed skin, greater stamina, an increased sense of well-being and clearer thinking!  We place a strong emphasis on educating each of our clients.  You will leave with a better understanding of nutrition and healthy living.

What can I expect from the Path to Health cleansing program?

After checking in to the Akin House, our naturopathic practitioner (ND) will meet with you individually to discuss your specific cleansing program.  Understanding patterns in your diet, lifestyle, exercise and overall health will allow the ND to develop your unique cleansing protocol.  Your cleansing program begins immediately with either fasting or consuming cleansing foods, colon hydrotherapy sessions, light exercise, massage, plenty of rest and other therapies prescribed in your protocol.  Fasting includes juices, broths and teas that are specific to your cleansing needs.  Your therapist will be on-site and available 24 hours a day to assist you with your cleansing program.   The basic program includes a 1-½ hour naturopathic consultation, 2 colon hydrotherapy sessions, 1 elective therapy (such as Shiatsu, Massage, Visceral Manipulation and Constitutional Hydrotherapy), juice, tea, broth and cleansing foods during your stay, activities and Systemic Health Exercises.
